What's New?
XenDesktop 4 further widens Citrix virtual desktop leadership by providing the best high definition user experience in the desktop virtualization market, with better reliability and higher availability than a traditional PC.
Key new capabilities of XenDesktop 4 include:
FlexCast desktop delivery technology
Different types of workers across the enterprise need different types of desktops. Some require simplicity and standardization, while others need performance and personalization. With FlexCast delivery, IT can deliver the best desktop for every user, every time. This powerful capability gives customers the flexibility to deliver any type of virtual desktop on any device – and to change this mix at any time. XenDesktop with FlexCast allows customers to use any combination of the virtual desktop technologies, all orchestrated from one, and managed centrally.
HDX Enhancements
The new HDX enhancements in XenDesktop 4 ensure the best possible user experience for multimedia content, real-time communication, USB peripherals and 3D graphics, regardless of the network or endpoint device. XenDesktop delivers HDX experience for every user, while utilizing 90 percent less bandwidth than competing solutions.
- HDX 3D for Professional Graphics
- HDX MediaStream for Flash
- HDX MediaStream enhanced delivery of server-rendered video
- HDX Plug-n-Play flexible multi-monitor support
- HDX RealTime webcam support
- HDX RealTime audio codec technology
- HDX IntelliCache with Citrix Branch Repeater
On-demand apps by XenApp
With application virtualization, IT can control data access, manage fewer images, eliminate system conflicts, and reduce application regression testing – simplifying desktop management complexity and cost by up to 50%.
Full Windows 7 Support
The XenDesktop introduces full support for Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit. With XenDesktop 4, migrating to Windows 7 is as fast and simple as configuring a single master image and assigning users.
Data security and access control
With XenDesktop, users can access desktops and applications from any location or device, while IT sets policies that control whether data ever leaves the datacenter. XenDesktop can dramatically improve endpoint security by eliminating the need for data to reside on the users’ devices. Centralized data, encrypted delivery, a hardened SSL VPN appliance and multi-factor authentication further ensure that only authorized users connect to their desktops, intellectual property is protected, and regulatory compliance requirements are met.

Microsoft-Citrix Virtual Desktop Infrastructure
Microsoft and Citrix have teamed to deliver an integrated end-to-end suite of technologies that represent a comprehensive and cost effective VDI solution. Microsoft-Citrix VDI solutions enable organizations to dynamically assemble virtual desktops on-demand, providing users a new and pristine, yet personalized, desktop each time they log on – ensuring that high levels of performance are maintained. In addition, Citrix HDX technologies provide unparalleled responsiveness over any network. Citrix XenDesktop together with the Microsoft VDI Suite including Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V and Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager R2 (SCVMM R2) give IT organizations the tools to maximize operational flexibility while greatly simplifying desktop lifecycle management by separating the delivery of the desktop OS, applications and user settings

The Advantages:
Scalable, stable and high performance hypervisor that hosts the virtual desktops. Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V is a next-generation hypervisor that includes features such as quick migration, high availability, and live backups.
An integrated management suite that allows IT to manage physical, virtual and session based desktops from a single console. Microsoft’s management capability also allows for managing non-Microsoft infrastructure components. Systems Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 is part of Systems Center, which is an industry leading IT management suite.
Application virtualization technology enables dynamic delivery of applications to the user’s virtual desktop instead of installing applications as part of the virtual desktop image. This helps reduce the memory footprint of the virtual desktops, as well as improves application management. Depending on whether the application is executed locally or remotely, customers can either deploy Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.5 or Microsoft Terminal Services RemoteApp.
Citrix XenDesktop functionality to extend the value of Microsoft’s VDI technology. XenDesktop dynamically provisions remote desktops, by combining a pristine golden desktop image with a user’s profile and personal settings at runtime, and delivering a personalized desktop to the end user while ensuring superior VDI performance.
Superior user experience leveraging Citrix HDX technologies to deliver the fastest desktop performance, up to 2x faster; access virtual desktops within seconds and eliminate lengthy boot times across any network on any authorized device.

Intel & XenClient — Technologies Working Together
At the heart of this solution from Citrix will be a bare-metal Xen-based Type-1 desktop hypervisor optimized for Intel Virtualization Technology (VT), Intel Active Management Technology (AMT), and other features of Intel vPro technology. Citrix is integrating these technologies into their client hypervisor, providing customers the benefit of desktop virtualization solutions leveraging the virtualization and management capabilities of Intel Core 2 desktops and Centrino 2 laptops with Intel vPro technology. The end resulting product will allow the hypervisor to serve as a foundation for centrally managed OS/user environments to be streamed, cached, and executed locally on desktop/laptop devices, including off-network mobility.
