Server Management Suite Enterprise – Licensing Change and Pricing Increase

On July 1, Microsoft will change the way it licenses the Server Management Suite Enterprise (SMSE). SMSE includes Operations Manager 2007, Configuration Manager 2007 R2, Data Protection Manager 2007 and Virtual Machine Manager 2008. To better align to the way Microsoft sells Windows Server Datacenter, SMSE will become Server Management Suite Datacenter (SMSD). Server Management Suite will be licensed by server box and will be limited to four guest OSs, and the new Datacenter edition will be licensed by processor (two-processor minimum) and cover unlimited guest OSs. Those who currently own the SMSE product with SA will be able to convert to SMSD for up to four CPUs on a physical server. Customers who are interested in running SMSE in conjunction with Windows Datacenter should buy now. Not only can you take advantage of the additional product promotion for both EA and Select, but you also will be “grandfathered” into the new Datacenter edition while purchasing under the current enterprise price.
